I shall leave them to germinate and grow on and maybe transplant them into a deeper pot next season after they have formed their bulbs.

The easiest to grow of the entire onion family. Chives is used as a traditional kitchen herb and improves the overall garden health with its positive pesticidal qualities. Chives are grown as cool season, bulb forming, perennials and are delicious in salads, and cheese and egg dishes.

Rob has sown the first seeds of the season in the lean to. He has put in a row each of Spring Onion De Barletta, Raddish Pontuil and herb Summer Savory. The Summer Savory was sown by mistake as it was in the lettuce seed box but if I can get a few good plants going all well and good.

Herb Summer Savory – Satureja Hortensis

Summer savory is a half-hardy annual that self sows freely and has a strong, hot and slightly bitter flavor reminiscent of thyme. Plants grow to about 14 inches and have slender, erect stems with sparse bronze leaves and small, pale pink flowers. Native to the Mediterranean, it was much in demand in early Rome where it was thought to be a powerful aphrodisiac.

I am making another attemp at growing the herb Rosemary. I have put the last of my seeds in a seven inch pot of moist compost and covered it with cling film. I actually bought a plant earlier this Spring and have managed to lose it already so am hoping to replace it and get a few more plants aswell.

This herb’s powerful fragrance goes well with lamb and chicken, as well as tomato soup, stews and fresh cooked peas. Sow the seeds from late winter to early summer in seed compost. Do not cover the seed with compost. Make sure that the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 12-40 days at 16C
